Codelco, a Global Leader in Copper Manufacturing, Chooses RedDot to Manage Their Intranet Portal

About

Codelco is the number one copper producer in the world, possessing 25% of the world’s red metal reserves. The name Codelco represents Chile National Copper Corporation; a state company whose main business goal is to explore, develop and extract mineral resources of copper, including its subproducts.  Codelco is also involved in the conversion and sale of refined copper.

Challenge

Codelco’s Communications department needed a Web content management solution to help administer marketing content. As the Chilean world leader in copper production and the specialization, exploration, development and extraction of copper subproducts, Codelco was looking for a flexible solution that would improve its organizational process for approving content.  Many of the content management pains that Codelco experienced were due to its dependency on IT staff to publish content to the site. As a result, IT devoted long man hours to completing simple content updates in order to maintain the intranet. The Codelco communications staff was also looking for a content management solution that provided a simpler user interface than their current CMS system in hopes of removing the IT bottleneck.

Solution

RedDot CMS was chosen as the primary Web content management platform for Codelco. Also, the RedDot CMS integration with Hummingbird and SAP Portal were decision factors for selecting RedDot.

Codelco’s Web project took approximately 5 months to implement, along with a collaboration with a major Web design. The Codelco project is part of an intranet site, "Media Center", a News center that is available for employees and the Codelco community. Currently, Media Center has approximately 10,000 news pages stored in their SQL database.  RedDot CMS administers the content generated by the company’s communications division, a department that is also responsible for the creation and online posting of all corporate information, as well as the archival of press release articles on Codelco’s Intranet.

Results

The Codelco executive team has noticed a significant improvement in the scheduling and publishing process of news information. Presently, Codelco has a total of 50 Smart Editors in the communications department managing content. Staff members are able to publish and approve content via a workflow process. The RedDot CMS deployment has also helped Codelco adhere to its corporate standards and guidelines by improving the granularity of control over Web design and layout. Now that RedDot CMS has eliminated Codelco’s reliance on IT staff to get important information posted to its site, any business user with simple RedDot training can easily administer and make simple content changes to the site. “It is a user intuitive interface.  RedDot users only need to click on the red dots to change content and you’re done!”, details a Coldelco executive.

Codelco plans to migrate its additional 120 websites to RedDot CMS, most of which are currently managed by the third vendor solution, Realinfo.
